Unofficial Toronto Neighbourhoods

Unofficial Toronto Neighbourhoods

Officially, the City of Toronto recognizes 158 neighbourhoods. While each of these regions boasts a distinctive ambience and identity, their broad boundaries leave room for the creation or inclusion of distinctive sub-communities and enclaves. This phenomenon is, unsurprisingly, common in a city as richly diverse and historic as Toronto.

Although the city’s many unofficial “neighbourhoods” lack formal municipal recognition, they are defined, celebrated, and embraced by residents nonetheless.

Baldwin Village

Part of the Grange Park neighbourhood, Baldwin Village is a lively commercial strip with a rising profile. Offering a dynamic collection of locally owned businesses, including MICHELIN-recognized dining, this small community still feels like a best kept secret.

Regal Heights

Perched atop the Davenport Escarpment, Regal Heights is a secluded and scenic enclave within the neighbourhood of Corso Italia-Davenport. Boasting lush foliage-lined streets, gorgeous properties, and proximity to Midtown Toronto’s top schools, Regal Heights’ high profile exceeds its relatively small size.

Geography is a defining feature of Regal Heights, as the community’s natural elevation and rolling terrain give many properties (particularly on Regal Road) sprawling views of the Toronto skyline, Lake Ontario, and, on a clear day, the Niagara Escarpment.

Republic of Rathnelly

Officially located within the neighbourhood of South Hill, the Republic of Rathnelly is a historic and distinctive community of just 250 homes. Renowned for its counter cultural heritage and announcement of succession in June of 1967, the Republic’s passionate community-first spirit remains palpable to this day.

Today, real estate in the Republic of Rathnelly is immensely sought after, particularly among affluent homebuyers. However, the area’s storied past lives on through dedicated, locally led preservation initiatives.

In addition to the Republic of Rathnelly street signs and historically referential laneway titles found around the community, residents’ annual ‘Rathnelly Day’ celebrations commemorate the enclave’s independent identity.

Sherwood Park

Close to Midtown’s bustling heart at Yonge and Eglinton, Sherwood Park is an informal community that overlaps sections of the North Toronto and Mount Pleasant East neighbourhoods. Despite the community’s unofficial status, it features some of the most in-demand real estate in Toronto.

Sherwood Park’s high end properties, quiet atmosphere, and strong public and private education options in particular attract wealthy families seeking an idyllic place to raise children.

Silver Hills

A former region of North York, Toronto’s St. Andrew-Windfields neighbourhood boasts some of the most exceptional and highest-priced real estate in the city. Silver Hills is a secluded enclave in the northeastern corner of St. Andrew-Windfields, separated from the surrounding neighbourhood by the lush Vyner Greenbelt.

Beyond the community’s opulent homes, residents are drawn to Silver Hill’s pragmatic location, which enhances commuter friendliness and grants seamless access to Uptown’s preeminent amenities and services.

Tarragon Village

South of Davenport Road, below the towering stature of Casa Loma lies Tarragon Village. A modest enclave of homes that have been isolated from the surrounding South Hill community by railway infrastructure and the bustling thoroughfares of Bathurst Street and Spadina Road.

Tarragon Village’s moniker was directly inspired by the Tarragon Theatre, a historic fine arts centre at the corner of Bridgman Avenue and Howland Avenue.

Wychwood Park

Just beyond the fringes of Downtown Toronto, Wychwood Park stands as one of Toronto’s most exclusive and remarkable neighbourhoods. Defined by its private, residents-only access points along Davenport Road and Tyrrell Avenue, this micro enclave is one of the very few gated communities in Toronto proper.

Home to only sixty residential homes, Wychwood Park is also one of the city’s smallest enclaves in terms of population.

Wychwood Park’s elevated status, extraordinarily minimal housing turnover, and impressive volume of noteworthy residents have created a distinctive air of mystery around the enclave. Even photos of the neighbourhood’s interior streets remain considerably rare.
