Where to Find Victorian Homes in Toronto

Where to Find Victorian Homes in Toronto

As a once critical city under the British Crown, Victorian style homes proved immensely popular throughout Toronto’s early development. Although contemporary tastes would evolve in the following decades and centuries, conscious preservation efforts ensured a substantial amount of the city’s original Victorian homes remained.

Today, Toronto Victorian era homes can be found in many neighbourhoods, including the city’s most revered enclaves. Continue reading for further insights.

What Makes a Victorian Home?

Victorian architecture remains a defining feature of several historic neighbourhoods across Toronto.

A Victorian home can be identified and defined by more than the period of its construction. Victorian architecture, as it pertains to residential development, offers several distinctive traits and characteristics. These include:

  • A slim or narrow build
  • Red brick exteriors
  • Steep gable roofs
  • High ceilings
  • Ornate finishes such as decorative trim, stained glass windows, or turrets
  • Large front facing windows

Cabbagetown: a Victorian Gem

Speaking merely in terms of volume, the most likely place to find Victorian homes in Toronto is the charming Downtown neighbourhood of Cabbagetown. Initially founded as the village of Don Vale in the nineteenth century, Cabbagetown boasts the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in all of North America.

Neighbourhoods Rich With Victorian Homes

While only one neighbourhood may boast the designation of “Most Victorian Homes”, there are several other communities in addition to Cabbagetown that are replete with Victorian housing.

The Annex

Nestled just beyond the sprawl of Downtown Toronto, The Annex’s development was inspired by the stately “Garden Suburbs” of other major North American cities. This conscious vision brought a notable volume of Victorian homes to the neighbourhood.

While The Annex is replete with many traditional examples of Victorian homes, some properties are unique in their size and scale. As one of Toronto’s most affluent neighbourhoods, buyers can find some of the larger and more spacious examples of Victorian homes here.

Little Italy

One of Toronto’s most lively pockets, Little Italy’s rich harmonization of past and present is palpable along every street in the neighbourhood. Featuring an expansive stock of Victorian homes, Little Italy continues to draw in younger home buyers, many of whom are looking for a community to raise their family.

Republic of Rathnelly

Rathnelly’s storied legacy is preserved not only through residents’ passionate sense of community, but also through its homes. Of the neighbourhood’s approximately 250 homes, a significant majority could be considered Victorian. By extension of this, many houses in Rathnelly feature unique, period-specific architectural quirks not found elsewhere in Toronto.

Summerhill

Offering an idyllic balance between urban convenience and suburban seclusion, Summerhill continuously ranks as one of Toronto’s best communities. Similar to neighbouring Deer Park, Summerhill was charted with upscale family-oriented living in mind. As a result, the neighbourhood boasts a healthy stock of Victorian homes.

Before You Buy a Victorian Home in Toronto

Toronto’s exceptionally preserved Victorian homes (and their communities) present a charming glimpse into the city’s rich heritage. However, in the realm of real estate, Victorian homes’ natural age and historic qualities evoke a number of implications for potential buyers.

As with any property constructed beyond a century ago, some degree of wear should be expected with Victorian homes. Although, many houses have been carefully maintained and thoughtfully modernized over the past decades.

Additionally, some Victorian homes in Toronto hold formal designations as part of the Toronto Heritage Register or their inclusion within a Heritage Conservation District. This designation impacts or restricts how these homes can be renovated or modified. For example, any changes to a (registered) home’s exterior will be subject to a manual review by council members. This ensures they do not detract from the property’s historic prominence and remains consistent with the neighbourhood’s aesthetic profile.
